Born in Glasgow to a crofting family who had migrated from Tiree, she first became involved in politics as a student at Glasgow University and joined the Labour Party as a teenager, citing Harold Wilson as her political hero.

Johann trained to be a teacher and worked at schools in Rothesay, Springburn and Castlemilk. It was there that she saw first hand the inequality and child poverty that emerged during the Thatcher years.

Although she was working full-time, Johann became more involved in the Labour, campaigning for greater women’s representation, acting as an election agent in 1992 General Election and chairing the party’s Scottish Executive.

Following the successful campaign for a Scottish Parliament, Johann was encouraged to stand as a candidate and in 1999 became the first ever MSP for Glasgow Pollok. She was successfully re-elected in 2003, 2007 and 2011, seeing off Tommy Sheridan at his peak and the rise in SNP support.

As First Minister, Jack McConnell appointed her as a communities minister and then a justice minister in the Labour-Liberal administration. She served as a committee convener before being elected Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in 2008.

She lives in Glasgow with her husband Archie and her two teenage children, Colin and Fay.
