Lewis has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament since 1999, and was constituency member for Aberdeen Central until 2011.

He has lived in the North East since his family moved from Stornoway to Insch when he was ten years old. Lewis has worked in the areas of research, education and representation in Aberdeen and the North East for most of the last thirty years; his wife, Sandra, works in the oil industry, one daughter attends a Scottish University and the other is at school in Aberdeen.

His responsibilities as a Minister included health, transport, planning, enterprise, energy, lifelong learning, environment, health, community care and rural development.

In his spare time, Lewis is a patron of the Dons' Supporters Trust, so life is never dull!
