Scotland needs a quality Jobs Guarantee Scheme now.

Unless this is delivered urgently, we risk mass unemployment and a lost generation of workers.

We need jobs for good – not the low-paid, part-time jobs for six months that the UK Government’s Kickstart scheme offers only to workers under the age of 24.

COVID-19 has brought into sharp focus just how fragile and unequal Scotland’s labour market really is. The impact of this global pandemic is beginning to have devastating effects on Scotland’s workers. It has triggered a surge in unemployment and will undoubtedly hit some harder than others.

More than a decade of SNP government left Scotland unprepared for the current public health crisis. The UK and Scottish governments have left the country unprepared for the coming economic crisis. Nevertheless, it is not too late to save livelihoods if we act now.

A coherent industrial strategy, with manufacturing and a Green New Deal at its heart, will put Scotland back on track and ensure fairer, greener and better jobs for all.

A national plan involving trade unions, employers and all levels of government must be the approach going forward.
