Abolish national standard testing for four and five year olds

The SNP government’s introduction of national standard testing in our schools has been a disaster from beginning to end. Teachers and parents have repeatedly told John Swinney that standardised tests cause pupils distress and produce no meaningful data.

That’s why Scottish Labour would abolish national standard testing in Primary 1, and review and reform them later in school. We would also reintroduce the highly regarded Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy, which the SNP abolished.
