SANGSTER ACCUSES SNP OF BREAKING THE PROMISE

Scottish Labour has accused the SNP of failing to keep The Promise as attainment gap widens.

Figures released this week show that gap between the proportion of looked after children and all children leaving school with at least National 5 qualification or equivalent has grown every year since 2021/22. Over 15% of young people looked after in the last year left with no qualifications at all.

They also demonstrate the percentage of looked after children in positive destinations after leaving school has gone down and is 10% lower than their peers.

Commenting, Scottish Labour’s Education spokesperson Katherine Sangster said, “These figures are deeply shocking. Far from keeping The Promise, progress for looked after children and young people is actually going in the backwards.

“This is another blow to Nicola Sturgeon’s legacy as her pet project fails to deliver any real change for Scotland’s most vulnerable young people.

“The fact that the Government has not even brought these important figures before parliament shows that they have completely dropped the ball.

“Young people are being failed and the Promise made to them is being broken. It seems impossible for The Promise to be delivered by 2030 at this rate and the SNP must answer for that.”
