Hundreds of Kids ‘Growing Up Homeless’ in Scotland

Hundreds of children are ‘growing up homeless’ in Scotland, Michael Marra has warned

As of March this year, a staggering 1,350 families had been in temporary accommodation in Scotland for more than two years, including 770 who had been there more than three years.

The SNP government declared a housing emergency in May 2024, so many of these families have been in temporary accommodation since before then.

The average stay in temporary accommodation for a couple with children is now 655 days.

Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra said: “Hundreds of kids in Scotland are spending years of their childhood in the uncertainty and instability of temporary accommodation.

“Multiple birthdays, Christmases and school years have passed for these children without getting a stable home. They are effectively growing up homeless.

“When the SNP government declared a housing emergency, these families would have hoped   that action would follow. Instead, two years later, hundreds of those same families are still stuck in limbo.

“We know that if we take action we can halve homelessness in Scotland in only two years.

“Politicians owe it to these kids to get round the table, roll the sleeves up and agree the measures to make that happen.”
